How to get out of school? Have a bomb scare

Goals and Objectives: Have time to write an essay, create lesson plans and bond with my child

I will say I was happy when the “Stay Put” announcement that rang through my period 3 English class changed to “Take everything you will need for the day. You will not be allowed reentry.” These words, like the song of angels from heaven, rang from the loudspeakers. It was a call from cloud nine; a bit of Karma reinstalling my belief in divine intervention. That morning, on the way to school when I had apologized for being grumpy, my daughter replied with an emphatic “Oh, yes.” And something to the extent of a “humph” and "that’s an understatement." I think she was referencing my attitude and perhaps some aspects of my behavior the previous night. But seriously, as a parent what are a few tyrannical moments in the bigger scheme of things?

Why all the drama in my house? Well, it correlates to the reason for the blog. In returning to school and pursuing my EdD at the University of Phoenix (don’t laugh the school is accredited) I have been challenged with juggling my life as a mother, teacher and student. It’s harder than expected, especially when your professor assigns four 2,000 word papers in the last few weeks of class. Doesn’t she understand we have lives? These papers make me set a bad example for my daughter as she catches me writing them the night before they are due every week. Alright, somewhat of an exaggeration, I usually start the night before the night before.

All this hard work and rigor also provides an interesting lens to view the current system of education that my daughter is traversed in and that I am a part of. A previous online professor told me to journal my experiences as I pursue my degree, but I plan to journal my experiences as parent, teacher and student. Who knows what will come to light.

So thanks to the heavenly forces that had some immature, unthinking student scrawl a note to get us out of school. I was able to write a paper, plan lessons for the next day and even enjoy some time not yelling at my daughter.
